SERVICE CALL – Repairing Weird Equipment I’ve Never Seen Before

This is a good episode to show y’all because it’s a bizarre thing that I got called into work on. Sometimes you run into equipment or situations that you’ve never seen before, and this is a great example of how I deal with it on the fly.

As you progress on your journey to becoming an experienced electrician, you will gain experience by running across situations, environments, and equipment that you’ve never seen before. A lot of time will be spent diagnosing problems that you don’t have answers to. This is completely normal, and is a great thing as it forces you to have to think and find information. It’s a great way to teach yourself and stretch the boundaries of what you know and what you don’t.

Many people are under the false idea that you get to a point where you know everything when you do a job long enough. Fortunately for this career, that’s just not true. The electrical trade changes so much that there is a constant renewal of new equipment, codes, materials, and procedures – forcing anyone on their journey to continually have to learn new information. The more you learn, the more you will open yourself to new avenues that are constantly evolving.

It’s absolutely ok to not know something, and have to go out and seek answers. This is what everyone else is doing as well. Some want to pretend that they know all of the answers and are more experienced than everyone else, but those tend to be very insecure people who, deep down, really know that they’re deficient – and are just trying to hide it by overcompensating the contrary.

As you journey out into the world, ask lots of questions, study, read books, listen to people speak, ask more questions, dig in, write things down, debate, and KEEP LEARNING. You will be wrong a lot. This is a great thing. Embrace it. It will be THE THING that makes you outstanding at what you do.
